EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
