Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
