Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes
Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
