Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hard courts
A revitalized Medvedev secured his maiden title for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open final.
The athlete, a former number one, has endured a challenging period, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a difficult moment at the American major.
The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his service game in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and finally splitting with long-time trainer Cervara.
Presently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set win over opponent Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's first title following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from March of that year.
The win also signifies he has secured twenty-one titles at 21 distinct tournaments.
"For the first time I have attended a event with my two daughters at once, so to secure a trophy is especially meaningful," said tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my child her name, because the initial championship I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his previous six finals, including in the German tournament previously this season.
The player's defensive strategy and frequent outbursts on court had prompted observers to doubt if his skill to compete at the elite level was concluded.
Yet the player has made changes in the last few weeks, striving to advance forward and perform aggressively, reinforced by an improved service.
He fought back from a break down in the first set against the difficult opponent, winning 4 of the last five points to go ahead.
The pair traded service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, attempting for his first tour title, gained dominance to push for a final set.
Moutet rescued four initial break points in a competitive third set before the champion broke to 15 to close out the victory.
Suitably, the winner earned the title with a rally at the net, with Moutet failing to control a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
