The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than one in 10 individuals eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy have access to them, warns the World Health Organization as it issues its initial recommendations on the therapies.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

According to estimates, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and continuous support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to widespread access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable body mass, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the current best projected outlook, the production of these medications could only cover around 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, according to the health organization.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to expand availability, by measures including licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Work

The injections imitate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance the sense of being full so individuals consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Studies points to patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of halting the medication, when their normal food cravings return.

Being overweight or obese raises your risk for experiencing medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity impacts people in every country and was associated with over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
