Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
